when talking about the music of com truise (one of the many pseudonyms of new jersey designer/musician seth haley), the nostalgia bit inevitably comes up, so lets get that out of the way. yes, his songs tap classic sci-fi and proto-electro in a way that is distinctly early eighties in scope. but they’re also remarkably weird--stutter-step proggy and intoxicatingly psychedelic, like those classic touchstones got drunk on lava lamp juice inside a pinball machine. after his well-received cyanide sisters ep, a grip of remixes for artists like twin shadow, neon indian, and, uh, daft punk, and a few floating mp3s, truises first lp, galactic melt, will finally enter brainspaces this summer.

following on from the furious 601 release we revisit the aquasky single and ask some mates of ours to go in on the remix tip and try and add some of their own bass induced mayhem and here, ladies and gentlemen, is the end result. not for the faint hearted or those of an uneasy disposition.

this is one of those timeless tracks that you still hear played out today. when it was released, orbit 1.3 was played by pretty much every representative of the tech-house sound - it featured on mixes by craig richards & lee burridge, doc martin, dj garth, sean cusick, dj three, and many more besides. not only that, but its appeal spread as far as the progressive fraternity and those of more traditional house sounds. its a deep throbbing epic with a haunting vocal sample and that indescribable >x factor< that makes a classic track.

if you were to cut neville watson he would bleed acid house, he would also quite likely knock you flat on your arse for having the temerity to wave a knife at him, but thats a whole other story. for his first wu contribution he ventures down the ethereal proto-house boulevard. jacking 707 patterns, a bouncing juno bassline and outer-space synth lines take you into the upper atmosphere for a glorious airborne joyride. as ever, neville manages to evoke those 85-89 feelings without ever sounding merely retro or like some kind of pastiche, something that many attempt but very few manage to pull off. over on side u apiento, the force behind the magisterially brilliant testpressing website, chips in with a heartfelt homage to the new beat sound. another testimony to the fact that a lower tempo doesnt have to mean diminished energy levels, the orange place simply oozes class from top to bottom. like some lost ancienne belgique classic it pounds and pumps along, building up the tension all the while until the quasi- eastern refrain lets loose half way thru and all of a sudden a mystic portal opens up in the space-time continuum that leads all the way to southwark street in late 87.

and are a duo living in manchester, uk. they have released a split 12 inch with 16 bit on mindset in 2009, the second 12 inch on black sun records that came out recently and a couple of 12 inches on horizontal ground. they sent me various batches of tracks spanning a wide range of sounds, all rooted in techno to my ears but spanning different tempos, emphasis and mood. i selected three of those tracks to appear on this ep, ranging between 130 and 135 bpm. onno is a highly dosed dancing pill, pop one and your rubber legs turn into those of fred astaire. his last release already proved that he knows how to make you put yo hands up in da air! now, heres his latest little treat >hablando loco ep< upon you number 048. the title track opens with some sweet vocals and then drills into your a1 memory banks with the spanish monolog from el commandante. on b2 hes quite content with the few words : >i like that beat<. but onno likes the repetetive use of vocals like a fitness trainer trying to squeeze that last drop of sweat out of you. gavin herlihy, who some of you know from cocoon, takes a subtler approach to the track with his remix that writhes in the scented oils that is house-deepness.

new vocal 12 inch on wph....tip! it should be obvious by now that we here at the wph camp are keen on real vocals. so while the rest of the world is busy sampling and recycling vocals from the past, leave it up to us to pick out those tracks that feature fresh and home made vocals. although wph 012 by dj yellow also indulges in a little bit of recycling, or rather good old fashioned licensing. the title track >night in tranzylvania< has been a huge favourite with label boss red d and his belgian crowd ever since it was released on the criminally overlooked album >intermission< on project recordings in 2008. but now it is back in all its glory and supported by >angels part< a killer ambient track which also featured on that album album, >je tm<, a new track by dj yellow and a russ gabriel remix of the title track.

their debut three tracker ep has a theme running through it.. yup, its all about sides. first up is a riff you may well know from trevor horn and fgth. they take the tribe groove, slow it down and strip the groove back. using just the riff from the famous 80s monster hit they cunningly carve out >two sides< as their sultry opener. next up >by my side< enlists the help of the handily associated brass section. shuffling grooves, stabby horns and muted picked guitar are the order of the day. its a perfect one for those early dj-set appetizing sections. to round things off we tone it down even further with the beautiful >by my side<. subtle tones, lazy keys and a smouldering groove. when the keys kick in during the last minute its a glorius and sublime treat. stay tuned for more sides.

dutch export ion ludwigs first offering for londons trelik imprint is a lesson in stripped back, mechanical groove-funk. title track >as the reaction followed i knew my feelings were right< is a rolling groover with nods to the kdj and theo school of deep house, with oven warm harmonies and vintage key sequences and lucid pads pushing the track along for its eight minute duration. flip over for >l sable<, which takes things in a more hypnotic direction with insistent stabs, a funky bubbling bassline and one of those vocals that you will be happily humming for days. forget what people are saying about old-skool and nu-skool deep house, this is simply house music at its very best.

mahori is one of those tunes. a hook and a bassline plus a killer rhythm. thats it! tailored to the dancefloor and heavily road tested by the labels artist collective. sano makes up a proper release between techno, house and chicago old school grooves. style rockets limited once again offers slightly more ruff straight forward techno house with groove & delicate rhythms. hand crafted tracks with a simple but sexy groove.

when we heard pompeya for the first time and were told they were from moscow, we were like: - what!? are you kidding? this is probably the first russian band singing in english with such a classy brit touch and male vocal being very strong and sophisticated at the same time. they jestingly describe their style as >melodramatic popular song< and >cheenese< is indeed a very dramatic piece with simple yet powerful composition and lyrics that really make big sense. the original is very well supported by a bunch of remixes each of which is unique on its own. an-2 & samos come with a warm, relaxed and funky instrumental version which is followed by a blockbuster mix from moscow disquo maestro leonid lipelis (an entirely perfect dance version of the original that could ever exist) and finally, for those few sirs and mesdames who are not yet aesthetically satisfied and who still find themselves seated while others jump and shout, here come d-pulse with their paranoid mix that gathers the thunderclouds to the full darkness and - at the end - lets the revival sunbeams break through.
